Flipkart Broadens Digital Payment Services with FASTag, DTH Recharges, and More

The e-commerce platform has partnered with BillDesk, a payment solutions company, to help integrate the new services with the Bharat Bill Payments System (BBPS).

E-commerce platform Flipkart has announced the launch of five new recharge and bill payment categories. These include FASTag, DTH recharges, landline, broadband, and mobile postpaid bill payments on its app.

These are in addition to the existing electricity and mobile prepaid recharge options. The e-commerce platform has partnered with BillDesk, a payment solutions company, to help integrate the new services with the Bharat Bill Payments System (BBPS), developed by the National Payments Corporation of India.

As part of a limited-time deal, customers can redeem offers of up to 10% with SuperCoins by using Flipkart UPI. With the launch of these new categories, customers can make their bill and recharge payments while enjoying shopping on Flipkart.

Gaurav Arora, Vice President, Payments and SuperCoins at Flipkart, said, "With a rapid surge in the digital payments industry, customers are increasingly opting for electronic mode for paying their bills. We have diversified our selection of services in line with Flipkart’s vision to simplify the digital payment journey for customers and further the government’s vision of a cashless economy.”

Flipkart also launched the super.money UPI app, which provides digital financial services like deposits, credit, and payments. The app has been made available in partnership with Axis Bank, and it will be available to 100,000 users initially as part of the beta version.

Interestingly, PhonePe, the erstwhile company group, has one of the biggest market shares of over 48 percent in the UPI ecosystem. PhonePe and Flipkart announced their separation in December 2022. After the separation, PhonePe’s blog statement said, “Establishing these businesses as individual entities will allow both to chart their own growth paths as they continue building industry-leading offerings that provide access and inclusion for Indians.”

In March of this year, Flipkart launched its own UPI handle. The company claims that it had five million transactions in that month. Flipkart’s fintech push comes at a time when fintech player Paytm is trying to revive after the central bank’s crackdown on Paytm Payments Bank Limited.
