Trump Appoints Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy to Head Government Efficiency Department

Musk promptly replied to Trump’s announcement and said the department will have a leaderboard for “most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars"

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian American tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will lead the USA’s newly proposed department of government efficiency (DOGE). The move was announced by US President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday. The department, which is tasked with conducting an audit of the federal government and recommending “drastic reforms” to save “trillions of dollars”, will complete their work by July 4, 2026, Reuters reported.

“Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my administration to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure federal agencies- essential to the ‘Save America’ Movement,” said Trump in a statement.

Musk promptly replied to Trump’s announcement and said the department will have a leaderboard for “most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars.”

“This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in government waste, which is a lot of people,” said the billionaire in a post on X.

Tesla founder gets rewarded

Tesla founder, who has been a staunch supporter of Trump and has openly endorsed him as the President, gets his first reward. Musk is all excited to lead the efficiency department and this will be the first time that he will head a government body.

The proposal to set up a department was earlier announced by Donald Trump as a part of his economic vision for the country. Musk showed a clear inclination to accept his offer in a post on X.

“I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises. No pay, no title, no recognition is needed,” said the billionaire in the post.

Who is Vivek Ramaswamy?

38-year-old Vivek Ramaswamy is an Indian-origin American politician and a tech entrepreneur. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology from Harvard University, followed by a law degree from Yale University. He authored the book ‘Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America’s Social Justice Scam’ wherein he argued that politics has no place in business. He is the founder of an American healthcare company, Roivant Sciences.

Earlier in 2023, Ramaswamy announced his candidacy for the Republican party nomination in the 2024 US presidential election. In his campaigns, he contested that in the US “faith, patriotism, and hard work” were being substituted by “new secular religions like Covid-ism, climate-ism and gender idealogy”.

However, after finishing fourth in the Iowa caucuses, he withdrew out of the race for the White House and immediately endorsed Trump.
