Kochi Water Metro: India To Get Its First Water Metro; Here’s All You Need To Know

The Kochi water metro has a capacity of carrying over one lakh passengers

Kochi Water Metro is set to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next major transportation project in Kerala this Tuesday on April 25. Kochi is going to get India’s first water metro and it is said to revolutionize transportation in India.

The main objective is to link ten island communities in Kerala’s city with the mainland, resulting in shorter travel times and more cost-effective transportation. The Kochi water metro has a capacity of carrying over one lakh passengers and it also boasts a distinct infrastructure. 

How Does The Kochi Water Metro Work?

The ferry is fitted with the latest technology and safety devices which will lead to smoother commutes and efficient travel. The water metro boats are battery operated and will only take 10-12 minutes between routes, and the latest technology will help in smooth sailing even during the rains. After the completion of the project, there will be a total of 38 stations and 78 ferry boats. 

Ticket Details Of Kochi Water Metro

Minimum ticket rate for a boat journey is 20 rupees, while the maximum is Rs 40. There are weekly and monthly passes for regular passengers, starting at Rs 180, Rs 600 and Rs 1500, respectively. The metro will also feature an Automatic Fare Collection system, which will integrate both rail and water metro. One can travel in Kochi Metro rail and Kochi Water Metro using Kochi One Card. The tickets can be booked digitally also through Kochi One App.

Here Are All That You Need To Know About The Water Metro

  • The water metro project will start with eight electric hybrid boats, which is manufacture by the Cochin Shipyard limited.
  • It is called Kerala’s dream project and it funded by Government of Kerala and German firm KfW. The water metro is owned by KMRL (Kochi Metro Rail Limited).
  • The over all cost of the project is Rs 1,137 crore.
  • In the first phase, the water metro will run from the High Court-Vypin terminals and Vyttila-Kakkanad terminals. According to Kerala Chief Minister, commuters will be able to reach Vypin terminal from High court terminal in less than 20minutes without being stuck in traffic. While the Kakkanad can be reached within 25 minutes from Vyttila via Water Metro.
  • Each boat is capable in carrying 50 to 100 passengers, with boats departing every 15 minutes.
  • The water metro will run from Lithium Titanite Spinel batteries making it ecofriendly. 
  • The metro is air conditioned with wide windows which will offer an exotic view of the backwaters.
