OpenAI versus Google: The artificial intelligence (AI) war has been intensifying, with every company increasing their investment in AI. AI company OpenAI has now added another new feature to its lineup by introducing ChatGPT search.
So now, the generative AI chatbot can search the web in a faster way. This upgrade, which makes ChatGPT similar to that of a search engine, makes it a more direct competitor of Google.
"ChatGPT will choose to search the web based on what you ask, or you can manually choose to search by clicking the web search icon,” the company said in a blog post.
The search option will be available on mobile phones, desktops, and also at chatgpt.com. Additionally, all the ChatGPT Plus and Team users, SearchGPT waitlist users, have access to the feature already. Meanwhile, the feature will be rolled out to free users in the coming months.
The primary crux of the feature is basically to enhance your search experience and give you the best search results. The ChatGPT maker also partnered with news as well as data providers for the same. The company claims that it collaborated extensively with the news organizations and global publishers and adhered to their feedback. Some of them include Associated Press, Axel Springer, Condé Nast, Dotdash Meredith, Financial Times, GEDI, Hearst, Le Monde, News Corp., Prisa (El País), Reuters, The Atlantic, Time, and Vox Media.
Speaking about the collaboration, Pam Wasserstein, President, Vox Media, said in a post, “ChatGPT search promises to better highlight and attribute information from trustworthy news sources, benefiting audiences while expanding the reach of publishers like ourselves who produce premium journalism.”
The search model that has been trained using novel synthetic data is a fine tune of GPT-4o, the company said in a statement. Additionally, the search will be done via content that will be provided by its partners and also third-party providers.
Soon after the launch of this feature, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X and shared, “If early reviews from friends are a reliable metric, search is going to do super well!” He further added, “Search is my favorite feature we have launched in ChatGPT since the original launch!”
This comes at a time when search engines have been extensively using AI to enhance their features. Google uses its custom Gemini model to do the same. Liz Reid, VP, Head of Google Search, wrote in a blog post, “Rather than breaking your question into multiple searches, you can ask your most complex questions, with all the nuances and caveats you have in mind, all in one go.” Microsoft also came up with Bing, its own AI search engine. What is interesting is that Microsoft is also an investor in OpenAI. As per reports, the company added around $10 billion in investment in OpenAI over several years.
