PM Modi Meets President Biden in Quad Summit: Know the Key Highlights of the Meeting

PM Modi, along with President Joe Biden, Australian PM Anthony Albanese, and Japan PM Fumio Kishida, discussed the significance of Quad in the world grappling with conflicts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Joseph Biden on September 21 and attended the Quad Summit in Delaware. Modi acknowledged the efforts made by Biden to strengthen the India-US global strategic partnership. Additionally, while addressing the summit, PM highlighted that when the world is surrounded by conflicts, it is significant for the Quad to unite for the greater good of humanity.

“PM recalled his state visit to the USA in June 2023 and President Biden’s visit to India in September 2023 for the G-20 leaders’ summit,” said the PMO in a press release on Sunday. He added that the visits have imparted greater dynamism and depth to the India-US partnership.

Apart from Modi and Biden, the Prime Ministers of Australia and Japan, Anthony Albanese and Fumio Kishida, respectively, also participated in the sixth Quad leaders' summit.

“Modi emphasised that the group stood for upholding the international order based on the rule of law, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and with a commitment to pursue peaceful resolution of disputes,” said the release.

Key developments of the Quad leaders’ summit

The leaders of the four democracies focused on Indo-Pacific priorities and highlighted the key issues and solutions to resolve them, including maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, quad port partnerships, etc.

The group is soon going to launch ‘Quad Cancer Moonshot’, a joint venture to leverage public and private resources to the number of lives lost due to cancer in the Indo-Pacific region. The primary focus initially will be on cervical cancer.

The Covid-19 pandemic that surfaced the issue of lack of proper health infrastructure in the countries to deal with large-scale health calamities, the QUAD has decided to support heath security, including financial assistance to the Pandemic Fund. Additionally, India is tasked with hosting a workshop on pandemic preparedness, while Australia is increasing the number of public health specialists who are ready to deploy, in response to disease outbreaks.
