In a world that is constantly powering itself towards adjusting with artificial intelligence (AI), big tech companies like Google and Microsoft become important torch-bearers of a rapidly transforming space. ChartGPT’s now rival, Bard by Google could be the next in line defining the future of AI. Powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), Google’s CEO has said that Bard is “an experimental conversational AI service.” Drawing information from the web, Bard provides fresh and high-quality responses to the queries raised by its users.

“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills,” wrote Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a blog post.

As explained by Google’s CEO, LaMDA is a next-generation large language model launched by the tech giant about two years back. Now, powered by LaMDA, is Bard, an experimental AI conversational tool, though not yet widely available.

Explaining about the usage, Pichai said that as of now, Bard will be available only to “trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.” In the wake of combining external feedback with Google’s own internal testing for Bard, the company has launched a much small version, one that requires significantly less computing power, more users and more feedback. As per the CEO, as far as Bard and AI are concerned, "developers can soon try our Generative Language API, initially powered by LaMDA with a range of models to follow."

“We’re releasing it initially with our lightweight model version of LaMDA.....We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information. We’re excited for this phase of testing to help us continue to learn and improve Bard’s quality and speed,” the blog post on Bard by CEO Sundar Pichai added.

Google’s Bard vs Open AI’s ChatGPT

For those unfamiliar with the hype around Bard vs ChatGPT debate, it must be known that Google’s biggest competitor Microsoft, recently announced its plans to invest $10 billion for the success of ChatGPT. Hence, as per many experts, Bard AI’s launch too, comes as a result of immense pressure on the tech giant to catch up with Open AI’s ChatGPT. While we don’t know if Bard can take over ChatGPT or vice-versa, here are some points to be highlighted about the two –

The functioning of Bard will be primarily backed by Google’s LaMDA that draws information from the web for all its responses. On the other hand, ChatGPT only accesses information up to 2021 and so, as of now, it is not clear if there will be room for more.

In addition to this, ChatGPT is widely available to the public for free even though there is a paid version called ChatGPT Plus. However, as far as Google’s Bard goes, the AI tool, as of now, is only available to select users for testing and will be opened to the public very soon.

Interestingly, Open AI’s ChatGPT recently also reportedly became one of the most popular apps, touching 100 million users within a few weeks of its launch. At a time when Google is widely hailed for its search engine capabilities, its foray into the AI space, especially with Bard, is something everyone is keen on observing.
