Monday Market Starts Poor For The Week

Sensex plunges over 200 points, while Nifty loses 82 points

The benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended low on Monday, as they lost 217.86 points or 0.60 per cent and 82.05 points or 0.74 per cent, respectively, during the day before settling at 36,323.77 and 10,936.85, at the end of day’s trading session. The falling of Nifty by 82 points also resulted in value of Nifty breaking below the 11,000 slab.

NTPC led among the top gainers with 1.96 per cent in the BSE Sensex, followed by Infosys (1.83 per cent), HDFC (0.95 per cent), Wipro (0.86 per cent) and Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (0.73 per cent), while Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel and ICICI Bank had to face the brunt of the fall of the Sensex as they lost the highest by 6.96 per cent, 4.77 per cent, 4.69 per cent, 3.31 per cent and 3.26 per cent, respectively, at the day’s market.

Tech Mahindra, NTPC and Infosys were the top three gainers with gains of 2.53 per cent, 1.73 per cent and 1.17 per cent, respectively, at the NSE Nifty, whereas Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Tata Steel and Lupin were the biggest losers.

The market saw the value of the Indian rupee rise by 0.05 paise or 0.07 per cent to the US dollar to stand at Rs 68.57, at the time of closing.

The S&P BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices suffered losses worth 377.70 points or 2.45 per cent and 406.33 points or 2.51 per cent, respectively, to close at 15,053.77 and 15,790.00, at the end of the trading session.

The global and Asian markets ended on a mixed note as the UK’s FTSE 100 lost 0.99 per cent, followed by Shanghai Composite (China) and DAX (Germany) with a loss of 0.83 per cent and 0.12 per cent, while Nikkei (Japan), CAC 40 (France) and Hang Seng (Hong Kong) gained 1.85 per cent, 0.06 per cent and 0.05 per cent, respectively. 

In the commodities sector, Brent Crude lost Rs 102 or 2.09 per cent and closed at Rs. 4,782 per bbl, while gold prices gained Rs 95 or 0.32 per cent and stood at Rs 30,200 at the time of filing this report.

The banking sector had a rough day at the BSE as HDFC Bank, State Bank of India and Axis Bank lost 11.25 points (0.52), 5.85 points (2.27 per cent) and 0.80 (0.15 per cent), respectively.
