Prime Minister Narendra Modi hails India as the only G20 nation to meet its Paris Agreement climate targets early, spotlighting ambitious future goals and a green energy transformation
India has become the only G20 nation to achieve its climate targets ahead of schedule, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Thursday. Speaking from the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day, Modi expressed pride in India's swift progress, declaring that the nation has surpassed its commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement.
Modi praised the strength and dedication of the Indian people, stating, "We have met the climate targets set under the Paris Agreement ahead of schedule. India is the only nation among the G20 countries to do so, and we are proud of it."
As part of its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), India has pledged to install 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel-based electricity by 2030, a commitment that has drawn astonished reactions from the international community. Modi assured that India is on track to meet this ambitious target, which is crucial for limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Currently, India’s power generation capacity stands at 446 GW, with approximately 195 GW sourced from non-fossil energy. Looking ahead, Modi outlined several key initiatives to achieve the 2070 net-zero target. These include the complete electrification of railways, the PM Surya Ghar initiative, and the promotion of electric vehicles.
Modi also highlighted India's plans to become a global hub for green hydrogen through the Green Hydrogen Mission, noting that the country is making significant strides in this area.
