Joshi will hold a set of bilateral meetings to boost sustainable developmental cooperation, green hydrogen, renewable energy value chain, and low-cost financing.

Speaking at the conference, Joshi said India is witnessing a transformative increase in renewable energy growth with a 175 percent rise from 75 GW to over 208 GW under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The country saw over 86 per cent growth in renewable energy generation in the last 10 years, from 193.5 billion units (BU) to over 360 BU, he said.

The minister said that as the country walks towards reaching net zero emissions, it becomes increasingly clear that sustainable maritime transportation is essential.

The minister stated at the conference that India is making notable progress in the field of green shipping thanks to government initiatives, technological developments, and international cooperation. Green Shipping is enforcing cleaner practices and emissions control in the shipping sector to decarbonise it.

Even though India has the lowest per capita emissions among G20 countries, it is the only one to have met its climate targets ahead of schedule, he added.

India is also taking steps in the green shipping sector and aims to be in the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2035 and in the top 5 by 2045, Joshi stated.

“We are focussing on converting existing vessels to operate on green hydrogen or its derivatives. The Shipping Corporation of India is currently converting two vessels to run on green methanol,” he said.

The government also started various initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), which aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

He also highlighted other important projects of NGHM with the aim to use green hydrogen in the shipping sector.
