India has launched at tender for 6 GW of renewable energy projects with storage solutions to ensure stable electricity supply during peak hours under the management of state-run hydro power firm SJVN
The tender for 6 GW of renewable energy projects issued by the government supports India's ambitious renewable energy goals and aims to enhance energy security across the nation. The tender will facilitate electricity supply through an interstate transmission system, insuring power distribution across state borders.
Initiative aligns with India's broader target to connect 35 GW of solar and wind capacity to its national grid by March 2025. This effort forms part of India's decarbonisation drive, which pivots on the country achieving 500 GW of non fossil fuel power capacity.
According to industry insights from Global Data, electricity generation from wind and solar technology in India continued its upward trajectory in 2023. Wind power output total 83.39 Tera Watt Hours (TWh) in 2023 while solar generation reached 115.97 TWh, both marking increases from 2022 levels of 71.82 TWh and 102.02 TWh respectively.
India's renewable energy capacity grew by an additional 10 Gw between April and August 2024. This took the total installed renewable capacity up to 153 GW. Despite these advances, renewables still account for only 21.6 percent of the country’s overall electricity generation. The current tender aims to accelerate this process ensuring a more sustainable energy future for India. The tender marks another significant step in the nation’s commitment to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and advancing its clean energy transition.
