Indian Railways Powers Ahead In Net Zero Carbon Emissions Drive By 2030

Indian Railways is making rapid strides towards achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030, with a major focus on powering its vast network through renewable energy sources

Indian Railways is on track to achieve its ambitious goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2030, according to a statement from the Railway Board on Tuesday. The Board emphasised its commitment to meeting the energy demands of the Railways entirely through renewable sources, highlighting significant progress across various regions.

One of the standout achievements comes from the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, where several buildings have been converted into net zero carbon emission structures. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, acknowledged them as Net Zero Energy Buildings by awarding them the 'Shunya Label.”

Over the past decade, Indian Railways has witnessed a remarkable expansion in its renewable energy production capacity. From 2014 to 2024, solar energy capacity has surged from a mere 3.68 MW to over 238 MW, while wind energy production has grown from 10.5 MW to an impressive 103 MW as of 30th June 2024. This exponential growth underscores Indian Railways' dedication to transitioning towards sustainable energy solutions.

The adoption of renewable energy is not limited to train operations; it extends to the infrastructure as well. Currently, more than 1,950 railway stations across India are powered by solar energy, reflecting the Railways' broad commitment to sustainability. The continuous increase in budget allocations from the Central Government has been instrumental in driving this growth, ensuring that Indian Railways remains a crucial player in the nation's renewable energy landscape.

The Railway Board expressed confidence that the ongoing expansion in solar and wind energy production will not only help Indian Railways achieve its net zero carbon emissions target but will also contribute significantly to environmental conservation efforts. As the nation moves forward, Indian Railways' dedication to green energy is set to make a lasting impact on both the industry and the environment.
