The Union Cabinet has green-signalled new railway lines that promise to reduce the carbon footprint by 267 crore kg, enhance connectivity, boost local economies, and advance sustainability goals
In a landmark move towards sustainable connectivity, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has given the green light to eight new railway projects with an estimated cost of Rs 24,657 crore. These projects, set for completion by 2030-31, are poised to make a significant environmental impact by lowering CO2 emissions by 0.87 million tonnes—equivalent to planting 3.5 crore trees—thereby making a substantial contribution to India's climate goals.
The expansion, which will extend the Indian Railways network by 900 kilometres, will connect 14 districts across seven states: Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and West Bengal. This development includes the construction of 64 new stations, enhancing connectivity to six aspirational districts and approximately 510 villages, benefiting around 40 lakh people.
Aligned with the Prime Minister's Vision of a New India, these projects will stimulate local economies, creating around three crore person-days of direct employment during construction. They are also integral to the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, ensuring seamless movement of people, goods, and services.
A notable feature is the connection of Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to the Indian Railways network, which is expected to boost tourism and local economic growth.
These projects will improve logistical efficiency by facilitating the transport of essential commodities such as agricultural products, fertilisers, coal, and steel. The capacity expansion will add 143 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA) to freight traffic, helping to reduce logistics costs and minimise oil imports by 32.20 crore litres.
Overall, this initiative represents a significant step towards a greener and more connected India, underscoring the commitment to sustainable development and enhanced rail infrastructure.
