Tamil Nadu has pledged to become a pioneer in India’s climate change battle, announcing its intention to achieve net zero emissions ahead of the national target of 2070

Thiagarajan emphasised that Tamil Nadu’s progress is crucial for India to meet its overall net zero target. Whilst acknowledging the state’s leading position in renewable energy, he stressed the need for further expansion. A dedicated policy to achieve net zero is in the works and expected to be finalised within a year.

Meanwhile, IIT Madras Research Park unveiled a home-grown 1 megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery storage system, a significant step towards energy independence. The technology, developed by the park’s Centre of Excellence for Energy and Telecom, offers a cost-effective alternative to grid power.

The research park, a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, already boasts substantial renewable energy generation through solar and wind power. The battery storage system complements this infrastructure, ensuring a stable power supply.

The collaboration between Tamil Nadu and New Mexico is expected to foster new partnerships in green technology and clean energy. US Consul General Chris Hodges expressed enthusiasm for the potential synergies between the two regions.
