Tamil Nadu has introduced the Tamil Nadu Repowering, Refurbishment & Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects – 2024, designed to stimulate the replacement of ageing wind turbines and maximise the use of wind energy resources. The new policy underscores the state’s commitment to advancing its renewable energy capabilities.

As of 30 June 2024, Tamil Nadu boasts a formidable renewable energy generation capacity of 22,754 MW, with wind energy contributing 10,790 MW, making it a key component of the state’s renewable energy portfolio. Since the inception of wind energy generation in Tamil Nadu in 1986, turbines with capacities ranging from 55 kW to 600 kW have been operational. Despite their age, many of these turbines remain in use.

The newly released policy is expected to incentivise developers to invest in upgrading and replacing these older turbines, thereby enhancing the efficiency and productivity of wind energy generation in the state. This initiative aligns with Tamil Nadu’s ongoing efforts to lead in the renewable energy sector and achieve optimal utilisation of its wind energy resources.
