Ola Electric on Tuesday announced the launch of two new range of electric scooters—Ola S1 Z and Ola Gig. The starting price of Ola Gig is set at Rs 39,000. The company will start deliveries of the scooters from April 2025.
Announcing the launch, CEO of Ola, Bhavish Aggarwal said, "Say hello to Ola S1 Z & Gig range, starting at just ₹39K! Affordable, accessible, and now with a portable battery pack that doubles up as home inverter using the Ola PowerPod Reservations open, deliveries Apr’25!"
Aggarwal presented Ola Gig as a solution to India's expanding gig economy. He said, "India’s Gig economy will be 2x in the next few years with more than 10 Mn workers. These workers unfortunately have to ride poor quality products at a much higher price."
The Gig range, which has two variants "Gig" and "Gig+", is designed to address the needs of gig workers involved in both shorter and longer trips through two variants. The introductory prices are Rs 39,999 and Rs 49,999 (ex-showroom) respectively.
The range will be available for business-to-business purchases and rentals, Ola Electric said in a statement submitted to exchanges. While Ola Gig offers a range of 112km on single charge and a top speed of 25kmph, Ola Gig+ offers a range of 81km with a top speed of 45kmph.
The S1 Z range is designed for urban commuters including variants S1 Z and S1 Z+ with a starting price of Rs 59,999 and Rs 64,999 respectively, the company mentioned.
Ola has three range of scooters as of now, the S1X which costs Rs 69,999, the S1 Air, costing Rs 1,00,499 and S1 Pro which is available for Rs 1.34 lakh.
The announcement comes at a time when Ola Electric is in a midst of allegations from its consumers regarding its services. Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) had ordered investigation into deficiencies in its services and its scooters. The company claimed that it has resolved 99 per cent of the 10,644 complaints forwarded by CCPA.
The reports of lay offs at Ola Electric have also surfaced recently. According to media reports, it has laid off 500 employees across levels and verticals as part of its restructuring exercise.
