Layoffs 2023: As mass layoffs continue in the tech sector, Apple CEO Tim Cook has reportedly called layoffs a ‘last resort.’ While Apple too, is navigating tricky waters just like its peers Google, Amazon etc., Cook has clarified that slashing jobs and firing people is the last resort.
According to an IANS report, even though Apple CEO has said that the company won’t fire employees, it has taken steps to reduce costs and has slowed its pace of hiring. It adds that Tim Cook also told CNBC that “mass layoffs is not something we’re talking about at this moment.”
The report adds that Cook also informed how Apple was becoming more ‘prudent’ on hiring. “We’re continuing to hire, just at a lower clip level than we were before. And we’re doing all the right things by challenging the things that we spend, and we’re just finding a few more ways to save on it,” IANS quoted Tim Cook as saying.
As per previous media reports, Apple laid off some employees in its corporate and retail divisions, but the number was very small. It has also reportedly delayed bonuses of employees.
However, the publication’s report adds that Apple did not hire the way other tech giants did during the pandemic. Hence, the iPhone-maker is relatively in a better position to not lay off employees as compared to its global peers like Google, Amazon, Facebook-parent Meta etc., that have trimmed jobs in big numbers.
