IT giants such as Infosys, Wipro, and TCS have made headlines recently for deferring the onboarding of graduates, leaving many unsure about when they'll actually start their jobs.

According to a report by Times of India, citing data from the Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), IT companies have postponed the joining of at least 10,000 freshers who were offered positions in the last two years.

This delay has created flux among the new hires, who are eagerly waiting to start their careers in the IT sector.

Harpreet Singh Saluja, president of NITES, said that the labor union has received grievances from candidates who were offered positions at the top and mid-tier IT companies including TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Zensar and LTIMindtree.

In an email, Infosys reportedly told these candidates, “We will allocate the DOJ (date of joining) based on business requirements and the DOJ will be sent at least 3-4 weeks prior to joining.”

In the fiscal year 2024, Infosys hired just 11,900 college graduates, marking a substantial 76 per cent drop from the 50,000 graduates it onboarded the year before.

Meanwhile, Wipro mentioned in a recent earnings call that the company is yet to fulfill campus job offers made two years ago. “The year before last, we went to campus and made many offers. We are yet to honour those. We will finish those offers and then hire new freshers. We will induct freshers this year, but we cannot give a number as the macro environment is uncertain,” Saurabh Govil, CHRO, Wipro said.
