At the Reliance annual general meeting (AGM) held today, August 24, the chairman of the company, Mukesh Ambani, talked about artificial intelligence (AI) extensively. One of them being Jio Platforms, working on creating an artificial intelligence (AI) service platform known as Jio Brain.
Ambani said at the annual general meeting, “To streamline AI adoption, Jio is developing a comprehensive suite of tools and platforms that span the entire AI lifecycle. We call this Jio Brain.” He highlighted that the company’s goal is to create the world's lowest AI inferencing cost, right here in India.
With this, AI applications will be made available for everyone in India, added Ambani.

Reliance plans to establish gigawatt-scale AI-ready data centers in Jamnagar, Gujarat, powered by the company's green energy, said Ambani. The company also intends to develop multiple AI inference facilities across locations nationwide, scaling them up to meet increasing demand. Before delving any further, let's understand what Jio Brain is.
What is Jio Brain?
In February this year, Reliance’s Jio platform introduced Jio Brain, an AI platform. Without requiring a network or IT transition, Jio Brain incorporates machine learning capabilities into telecom networks, enterprise networks, or any other industry-specific IT environment.
“JioBrain integrates 5G’s high speed, low latency, and massive connectivity with advanced machine learning capabilities such as anomaly detection, predictive forecasting, and automation. The platform can train and apply ML models at the network edge and in the service provider cloud,” the company said in a blog statement.

As per the Reliance chairman, Jio Brain will help accelerate the usage of AI in Jio. He anticipates that by perfecting Jio Brain within Reliance, “we will create a powerful AI service platform that we can offer to other enterprises as well."
Jio AI Cloud
Starting from Diwali, Jio users will be given up to 100 GB of free cloud storage. This is in line with the company’s AI vision. The intent behind it is to make AI and cloud storage affordable for the masses.
Ambani said in the meeting, “Jio users will get up to 100 GB of free cloud storage to securely store and access all their photos, videos, documents, all other digital content, and data.”
While highlighting that digital is another key area of the company, Ambani said, “We have filed patents in 6G, 5G, AI-Large Language Models, AI-Deep Learning, Big Data, Devices, Internet of Things, and Narrowband-IoT.”
AI, as we all know, is crucial and an important part of our lives. Countries have been investing massively in AI.
However, a study by Change Engine, a Delhi-based AI accelerator builder, highlights that India lags behind in the race for contributions of AI research papers. According to the survey, businesses lead in citation effect measurement, with Google leading the way. Furthermore, according to the UN report, OpenAI ranks 13th in citations with 11,816, demonstrating tremendous influence, despite only publishing 48 articles. The list includes no Indian companies.

While reasons such as lack of infrastructure are the reasons behind the same, one thing that becomes important is for corporations and the government to work together. No wonder Indian companies are leveraging the usage of AI and making investments in the same. This was quite evident when both Reliance and Tata partnered with Nvidia. Additionally, India is also home to a large number of AI start-ups. As per SAP India, more than 77 per cent of start-ups invest in advanced technologies that include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, IoT, and blockchain.

What is interesting is the way Reliance turns the game around with regards to the usage of AI. Making data accessible was done after the company introduced Reliance Jio in 2016, which promised cheap data to people. As per the telecom regulator's data, India has 475 million customer bases.
Today, the country has more than 800 million internet users. With the increasing usage of the internet, there are lots of changes, such as penetration of e-commerce, quick commerce platforms, an increase in online consumption, and more.
Now, Reliance is once again trying to focus on the affordability factor to make AI available for everyone. It will be interesting to observe how Reliance's aim to make AI affordable shapes India's AI evolution.
