Amid mass layoffs, tech giant Google has reportedly readied itself to give another shock to its employees, this time in terms of promotions. As per updates, Google is all set to roll out fewer promotions this year.

According to a report by CNBC.com, Google has informed its staff via an email that only a dozen employees will receive promotions this year. The same has been decided due to fewer hiring and mass layoffs this time.

“The process is manager-led and will be largely similar to last year – though with our slower pace of hiring, we are planning for fewer promotions into L6 and above than when Google was growing quickly,” CNBC.com quoted Google’s email to employees as saying. It clarified that the L6 category at Google includes employees with about a decade of experience.

Google’s new changes also come at the backdrop of the company implementing a new performance review system. The system called Google Reviews and Development (GRAD) will reportedly result in more employees getting low-performance ratings and fewer getting higher ratings.

It must also be noted that the news of Google rolling out fewer promotions comes as a shock to many as the company recently indulged in mass layoffs. When CEO Sundar Pichai announced these layoffs, he even mentioned that while the company is sacking some people, it will still continue its growth in some strategic areas like the artificial intelligence (AI).

These changes and layoffs at Google come on the backdrop of recession fears that have gripped the world economy. Over the last couple of months, many other tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and others have also laid off employees.
