A London-bound Air India international flight crashed near the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday. The Tata Group’s airline had around 242 passengers onboard, the PTI reported.
Air India in a post on social media platform X, mentioned that the Flight AI171, operating between Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, met with an incident. The company didn't mention any update regarding the cause of crash.
"Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025," said Air India.
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in a statement mentioned that Air India plane, which had 242 people onboard along with pilots and cabin crew, crashed immediately after takeoff.
“There were 242 people on board the aircraft, consisting of 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew. The aircraft was under the command of Capt Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar,” said DGCA.
Minister of Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu is on his way to visit Ahmedabad where the unfortunate incident took place to understand the ground situation. Ministry of civil aviation highlighted that the rescue and medical teams are present at the Air India plane crash site.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the aviation minister to get ground details of the incident and has asked to ensure all necessary support, the ministry added.
