Apple supplier Foxconn has begun production of iPhone 15 at its Tamil Nadu plant. The company has been looking to diversify its supply chain away from China as Foxconn prepares to deliver the devices from Sriperumbudur plant.

Bloomberg reported that the delivery of the new devices will begin just weeks after shipping starts from factories in China. Apple has been looking to boost volume of iPhones coming from India. In the previous fiscal year, the company produced 7 per cent of its iPhones in the country.

In April this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook had visited India and inaugurated two retail stores in Delhi and Mumbai. He had also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the company is looking to increase its investment in the country.

In India, Foxconn, Pegatron Corp and Wistron are three suppliers who have set up their units to produce iPhone. Notably, the Wistron unit is being acquired by Tata Group. Production of iPhone 15, which will reportedly be unveiled on September 12, is expected to begin at other factories soon, Bloomberg reported. The new iPhones possess the 3-nanometer A16 processor.

The report added that Apple wants to bring the timing of deliveries from India and China plants on par in this financial year but the suppliers are not sure whether they can achieve the target. In the last financial year, iPhones worth $7 billion were produced in India. According to Bloomberg, the shipment of devices from India lags China by six to nine months. The company wants to increase its manufacturing base in India to avoid any impact of tensions between Washington and Beijing.
