It has been reported that pet parents in a Bengaluru apartment have been requested to pay a Rs 10,000 registration fee under the guise of "pet maintenance."
The Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of the Ittina Mahavir apartment complex located in Electronic City, Bengaluru sent out a message requesting that residents register their pets by paying a Rs 10,000 refundable fee.
The RWA stated in its notice that the pet maintenance charge will be used for additional pet-related services in the residential area as well as for treating dog bite victims, according to a report by The Times of India.

There are reportedly more than 1,000 apartments in the building. Of these, about 100 inhabitants have a pet.
Media reports state that 15 November is the deadline for paying the maintenance charge. Beginning on 16 November, residents who do not submit the payment on time will be penalized Rs 100 every day.
Many social media users have voiced their worry and ire over the order ever since the issue gained attention. Some even called it illegal.
“10000 is more than enough for treatment of dog bite case. And if that 10000 exhaust then collect another 10k from all dog owners... After dog bite if person get rabies that is other scenario," a user exclaimed on the microblogging site X.

“This rule by the RWA is illegal and unlawful. The association president and office bearers should be booked for such rules & made to retract the rule and refund any money collected with interest," responded another X user on the news.
It is noteworthy that a spate of dog bite incidents have made headlines in the past one year in India. Reports of careless pet handling by their owners, have also come to the fore in the recent past.
