Amit Gupta-led startup Boat has reportedly witnessed a major data breach incident. The private details of over 7.5 million customers have made their way onto the dark web. This includes sensitive information like names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and customer IDs.

As per a report by Forbes, an individual under the name 'ShopifyGUY' claimed to have breached the data of boAt Lifestyle, a company known for its audio products and smartwatches. The hacker shared files containing the personal information of customers, totaling 7.5 million entries.

Data breaches have become common in the past many months. These breaches can have far-reaching impacts on people as they can leave them more susceptible to financial scams, phishing attempts, and identity theft. Saumay Srivastava, a threat Intelligence Researcher, stated in the report that with access to sensitive details, threat actors could engineer digital attacks, manipulate personal information to gain unauthorized access to bank accounts, make fraudulent transactions, and misuse credit cards.

The company recorded sales exceeding Rs 3,000 crore by March 2023. Its total revenue reached Rs 3,403.1 crore, up from Rs 2,886.4 crore in the previous fiscal year FY22.

Frequent occurrences of data breach can pose a great risk to people as the world shifts towards a more digitalised space.

Last year, the private information of 815 million Indian citizens, including Aadhaar numbers and passport details, was discovered for sale on the dark web. The sellers claimed that the data was sourced from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
