The Election Commission of India released a circular on Friday stating that it will announce the roadmap for “General Election to Legislative Assemblies” on August 16. In a press conference, scheduled around 3:00 PM, the commission will notify about the states that will have assembly election.

“Press Conference by Election Commission of India to announce the schedule for General Election to Legislative Assemblies,” said the ECI circular.

It is likely that the ECI will announce assembly elections for the state of Haryana, Maharashtra and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The five-year term of Haryana and Maharashtra state assemblies will end on November 3 and November 26, 2024, respectively.

On the other hand, the UT of J&K has been without an elected assembly since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The Supreme Court of India has directed the ECI to conduct assembly election for J&K by September 30, 2024.

Recently, the ECI visited Haryana and held a “detailed and comprehensive review of the poll preparedness for the forthcoming Assembly Elections in Haryana at Chandigarh.”

In a two-day visit to the state, Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar along with the two Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu held meeting with state political parties for conducting election on 90 assembly constituency seats in the state.
