Former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Raghuram Rajan is back in the news, this time, for not so great reasons. After expressing his unconventional views while answering a question, the renowned economist has come under the fire, and also sparked a heated debate among the public.

Responding to a question about him joining politics and his potential role as the country’s next finance minister or prime minister, Rajan expressed his indifference. He said that he didn’t care if India became the superpower or not, his focus lied on fulfilling the aspirations of every Indian.

While the vision was in alignment with that of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Rajan faced a lot of backlash.

“I don’t care about India being a superpower, to me that’s not the point. It’s about what the father of the nation wanted, which means making every Indian happy,” Raghuram Rajan said while responding to the above-mentioned query.

While the former RBI Governor’s remarks have been understood by some, others’ reactions have led to Rajan drawing a lot of ire and criticism. Netizens also slammed Rajan’s views as ‘extreme’ and accused him of disregarding the welfare of millions of Indians.

Some Twitter users, while sharing the video, also said that achieving the superpower status also comprises of reducing poverty, improving healthcare and enhancing the overall quality of life – all this being extremely important for the nation’s progress.
