G20 Presidency: What Agendas Are Set To Be Discussed At The G20 Summit?

The upcoming G20 Summit is likely to address several global level issues with its theme of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: One Earth, One Family, One Future”. The event is set to take place on September 9 and 10 in New Delhi, and will mark the end of India’s year-long presidency of the international forum. According to a recent statement from the White House, the partners will address economic, geopolitical, and climate issues at the summit.

As the host, India will put forward the issue of sustainability to promote environment-friendly practices. LiFE, a global movement led by India, will be a part of the discussion. The mission aims to mobilise at least one billion Indians and other global citizens to take individual and collective action to protect and conserve the environment in the period between 2022 and 2028.

Another topic that will be a matter of discussion is the long-running Ukraine war. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin is not going to attend the summit; instead, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent the world’s largest country.

For growth, areas that will be addressed include sectors with potential for structural reforms, promotion of labour rights and welfare, development of food chains, and bridging social gaps.

The members will also touch the need for a human-centric approach to technology among its many discussions. They will press on the importance of knowledge-sharing in areas like digital public infrastructure and financial inclusion. Technology-driven progress in sectors such as agriculture and education will also be discussed.

Apart from these economy related topics, emphasis will also be on women empowerment. A point here worth noting is that among the partners, only two representatives are female – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Such summits like G20 are expected to end by all the members agreeing to a joint communique related to matters such as geopolitical tensions, economic disruptions and social issues.
