Netflix on Wednesday announced that its new ad supported plan has five million monthly active users, just six months after its launch.

The plan costs $7 per month, less than half the price of the standard plan which costs around $15.

However, it is important to note that users aren’t necessarily susbcribers, as many could be sharing their plans.

The ad-supported tier of subscription service was launched in 12 markets around the world in November.

According to a Bloomberg report, the streaming giant had 233 million paying members at the end of first quarter.

"On average, more than a quarter of our sign-ups now choose the ads plan in countries where it's available." Netflix Co-chief Greg Peters was quoted as saying by AFP.

The company also shared that over 70% subscribers of the ad-supported plan are aged between 18 and 49.

"Netflix shows and movies are generating global audiences that are many times bigger than our closest competitors," said Netflix Co-chief Ted Sarandos.

The results were shared by the company at a virtual event where networks presented their lineups to media buyers.

Netflix also announced its lineup for upcoming shows which included the popular ‘Stranger Things’ and a new show ‘Griselda’ starring Sofia Vergara.

The company’s plan to present the numbers was affected by the writers strike ongoing in the United States. It had earlier planned to host an in-person event but changed plans after writers threatened to picket the venue.

The strike has also raised questions about whether several production houses will be able to deliver the shows that they have already promised.
