Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Russia’s Kazan on Tuesday to attend the 16th BRICS summit which is scheduled to be held from October 22–24. PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world leaders.

Modi said, “India-Russia ties will be strengthened after the opening of Indian consulate in Kazan.”

Addressing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Modi reiterated India’s stance on peace. He said, “We maintain that peace is important, and we support the restoration of peace” adding that India is ready to provide all help in the coming days.

Sharing a video of his arrival in Kazan on X, Modi said, “A connect like no other! Thankful for the welcome in Kazan. The Indian community has distinguished itself all over the world with their accomplishments. Equally gladdening is the popularity of Indian culture globally.”

The theme for BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit 2024 is ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security’.

The grouping expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates this year. It comprises 41 per cent of the world population and 24 per cent of the world GDP.

BRICS was envisaged as a group of non-Western countries, which can act as a counterweight to institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, dominated by the Global North.

Last week Putin said said BRICS should explore a SWIFT-like cross-border payments system immune to Western sanctions as well as use national digital currencies in financing investment projects to end U.S. dollar dominance.
