PM Modi, President Biden Discuss Ukraine Crisis, Plight of Hindus in Bangladesh

PM Modi highlights the common democratic values shared by India and US over the phone call initiated by Biden on Monday

Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the ongoing geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and Bangladesh with US President Joseph Biden on Monday over a phone call. A press release by the Prime Minister’s Office on August 26 informed that the two leaders of the largest and the oldest democracy had in depth conversation on regional and global issues. 

While referring to Russia-Ukraine tension, Modi emphasised India’s stance in favour of dialogue and diplomacy. He mentioned his support for return of peace and stability in Ukraine. 

PM Modi posted on X about the conversation he had with Biden. “Spoke to @POTUS @JoeBiden on phone today. We had a detailed exchange of views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine...,” he said in his post.

In the aftermath of political turmoil and change of regime in Bangladesh, both the heads expressed concerns, and the brutality faced by minorities especially, the Hindus. The disturbed state of law and order in Bangladesh too was a matter of concern for both Modi and Biden. 

“The two leaders expressed their shared concern over the situation in Bangladesh. They emphasised restoration of law and order and ensuring safety and security of the minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh,” said the PMO in the press release.  

The need for safety and security of Hindus and all other minorities in Bangladesh was mentioned by PM Modi while congratulating the newly sworn-in head of Bangladesh interim government, Muhammad Yunus in a post on X.

Additionally, the pursuit of democratic values common to both India and US were highlighted by PM. He appreciated Biden’s commitment to “India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.” 

The PMO statement stated Modi’s and Biden’s commitment to strengthen cooperation in multilateral fora, and including the Quad. Quad is a grouping of four democracies and both India and US are the members of it.
