What is an Aadhaar card?

Aadhaar was launched in 2009 as a voluntary exercise and the UIDAI was set up to implement Aadhaar, with Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani as its first chairperson. It is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the UIDAI to every individual resident of India. It serves as proof of identity linked to the individual’s biometric and demographic information.
