The United States of America (USA), the oldest democracy in the world, is set to find its 47th President. After a strong campaigning by both the Presidential candidates Donald Trump (78) and Kamala Harris (60), the results of 2024 US presidential elections will be declared on November 5.

Former Republican President Donald Trump is running to become USA 47th President against Democratic party’s candidate Kamala Harris. Currently, Harris is serving as the US Vice-President. Apart from them, Politician and activist Chase Oliver, Physician Jill Stein and Political Activist Cornel West are also contesting as independent candidate.

How will the US 2024 election impact India? 

Whether Harris or Trump comes to power, it is likely to impact India particularly trade relations. During one of his campaigns, Trump had called India the “biggest charger of tariff” on foreign goods. He announced that is he comes to power, his economic policy for international trade will be based on the principle of reciprocity. Additionally, Trump’s “America First” policy is likely to restrict hiring in the information technology (IT) sector, which will impact Indians eyeing to work in the sector in America. 

According to an analysis done by JM Financial Institutional Securities, Kamala’s win will strongly back the US federal reserve rate cut stance. Consequently, it is likely to push Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to ease rates domestically.

Who can become a President in USA? 

To become a President of America one has to be a natural-born citizen of the USA, a resident in the states for 14 years and must be at least 35 years of age.

The US President is indirectly elected through a process called the ‘electoral college’. The citizens choose the members of the electoral college called the “electors” through a five-step process. The electoral college comprises of 538 members from 50 states. The five-step process includes: primaries and caucuses, national conventions, election campaigning, general election and electoral college.
