The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has announced Bharat Bandh for Wednesday, August 21, in response to the Supreme Court's verdict on SC (Scheduled Castes) and ST (Scheduled Tribes) reservations.

The ruling allows states to establish sub-categories within SC/ST groups to streamline reservations for groups who need the most. This verdict has generated significant unrest, especially among SC/ST communities in Rajasthan.

What is the Supreme Court's Recent Ruling?

The Supreme Court ruled that states could set up sub-categories within SC and ST, so that people who need reservation the most, could avail it.

However, this has been criticised by many social and political groups who believe that it undermines the fundamental principles of reservation. This became evident as massive protests erupted, with demonstrators calling for the reversal of the decision.

Are Banks, Markets, Hospitals and Schools Closed?

There is no concrete information regarding the closure of schools and banks. However, the Rajasthan government has shut down schools in specific areas for classes 1 to 12, as a result of which children’s exams have been postponed.

Schools, colleges and petrol bunks will be open during the Bandh in other areas despite Rajasthan closing its schools.

The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has asked all businesses to close in support of the protest. However, it is unclear whether markets across the country would close, as there has been no official word from the market committees. Many services are likely to be affected but essential services like healthcare would go ahead.

BSP leader Mayawati has come out in support of the Bandh stating that the Supreme Court’s ruling has undermined Reservation in the country.

The call for Bharat Bandh is expected to garner support all over the country.
