Bluesky, a social media platform, has seen an increase in downloads and users after Brazil banned X, formerly known as Twitter, according to media reports.

As per a report by Tech Crunch, the development comes after the Supreme Court of Brazil banned X after a long legal battle between the social media platform and Brazil's Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes.

X had refused to block certain accounts which were accused of selling election misinformation after the Supreme Court's request.

After its refusal, X shut down its operations in Brazil, which prompted the court to ban them and threaten its social media platform users attempting to circumvent the ban using VPNs.

After seeing a surge in the users for the past three days in Brazil. Bluesky took to its platform to make the announcement.

“Brazil, you're setting new all-time-highs for activity on Bluesky!,” said Bluesky in a post on the platform.

In another post, the social media platform said that it had added a million users in just three days. “wow… welcome to the ONE MILLION new users in the last three days!!!”

Bluesky's CEO Jay Garber expressed his delight over the surge of users in the platform, stating, “Good job Brazil, you made the right choice.” The platform, which fully opened to the public in February 2024, has over 7.6 million users now.

Bluesky was founded by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. It was launched as a Twitter-backed project in 2019 and has over the years emerged as an alternative to mainstream social media platforms for Brazilian users.

Though it is a rival to X and Meta, Bluesky is still not a mainstream social media app. It is only the users of Brazil who have given it a massive push.

Brazil with its ban on X has joined a list of countries that have taken measures against the social media platform.

The decision taken against Twitter is to curb the anti-establishment and dissident voices in the country. The countries that Brazil will join are China, Iran, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Venezuela etc.
