The benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty were on a roller coaster ride at the share market on Wednesday, as they lost 146.52 points or 0.40 per cent and 27.60 points or 0.25 per cent, respectively. At the end of the day’s trading session, the Sensex closed at 36,373.44, while the Nifty closed at 10,980.45.The fall of the Sensex and Nifty swayed the market towards the disappointing Monday start, after having good gains on Tuesday.
In the BSE Sensex, ONGC led among the top gainers with 2.69 per cent, followed by Asian Paints (0.98 per cent), HDFC (0.91 per cent), Yes Bank (0.80 per cent) and Hero MotoCorp (0.63 per cent), while Tata Steel incurred highest losses worth 5.22 per cent, followed by Vedanta Ltd, Axis Bank, Hindustan Unilever and Tata Motors with a loss of 3.02 per cent, 2.57 per cent, 2.37 per cent and 2.19 per cent, respectively, at the end of the day’s trading.
The NSE market saw Indiabulls Housing Finance Ltd, ONGC and Bharat Petroleum end as the top three gainers rising by 4.03 per cent, 2.66 per cent and 2.25 per cent, respectively, whereas Tata Steel, Hindalco and Vedanta Ltd were the biggest losers.
The value of Indian rupee fell by 0.17 paise or 0.25 per cent to the US dollar to stand at Rs 68.62, at the time of market closing.
The S&P BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices had a disappointing day at the market as they lost 194.76 points or 1.27 per cent and 151.52 points or 0.95 per cent, respectively, to close at 15,181.35 and 15,814.66, at the end of the trading session.
The global and Asian markets saw a better outcome on Wednesday as compared to Tuesday as UK’s FTSE 100 and Germany’s DAX ended with a gain of 0.61 per cent each, while Japan’s Nikkei and France’s CAC 40 gained 0.43 per cent and 0.39 per cent, respectively. China’s Shanghai Composite lost 1.25 per cent followed by Hong Kong’s Hang Seng with a loss of 0.23 per cent.
In the commodities sector, Brent Crude lost Rs 34 or 0.73 per cent and closed at Rs. 4,635 per bbl, while gold prices fell by Rs 16 or 0.05 per cent and stood at Rs 29,713 at the time of filing this report.
The BSE saw the banking sector close on a negative note as Axis Bank lost the most with 13.85 points (2.57 per cent),while HDFC Bank and State Bank of India lost marginally by 0.65 points (0.03 per cent) and 0.25 (0.10 per cent), respectively.
