Week Starts on a Positive Note for Sensex and Nifty

The Monday market closed on a positive note, signalling a good start to the week as the benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty gained 157.55 points or 0.42 per cent and 41.20 points or 0.37 per cent, respectively.  The Sensex shuttled between 37,533.50 and 37,292.45 before closing at 37,494.40, while the Nifty closed at 11,319.55 after shuttling between 11,328.10 and 11,261.45, during the day.

In the BSE Sensex, Bharti Airtel witnessed the highest gains with 5.13 per cent, followed by ICICI Bank (4.76 per cent), SBI (3.75 per cent), Axis Bank(2.67 per cent) and Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (2.52 per cent), while Infosys Limited lost worth 1.56 per cent, followed by HDFC Bank, L&T, Adani Ports with a loss of 1.41 per cent, 1.19 per cent, 0.90 per cent and 0.80 per cent, respectively, at the end of the day.

The NSE market saw Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank and SBI end as the top three gainers rising by 5.68 per cent, 4.88 per cent and 3.40 per cent, respectively, whereas HDFC Bank, Infosys and HCL Technologies Limited were the biggest losers.

The S&P BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices had a positive day as they gained 48.48 points or 0.30 per cent and 90.24 points or 0.55 per cent, respectively, to close at 15,961.10 and 16,540.44, at the end of the trading session.

The value of Indian rupee stood neutral without any gain or loss against the US dollar at Rs 68.65, at the filing the report.

The day turned distraught for global and Asian markets as they ended low with Japan’s Nikkei with highest losses worth 0.74 per cent, followed by France’s CAC 40, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, Germany’s DAX, China’s Shanghai Composite and UK’s FTSE 100 with losses by 0.27 per cent, 0.25 per cent, 0.19 per cent, 0.16 per cent and 0.11 per cent, respectively.

In the commodities sector, Brent Crude gained Rs 88 or 1.87 per cent and closed at Rs 4,802 per bbl, while gold prices fell by Rs 42 or 0.14 per cent and stood at Rs 29,738 at the market closing.

The BSE saw the banking sector close on a mixed note as HDFC Bank incurred losses worth 31.15 points, while Axis Bank and State Bank of India ended with a gain of 14.80 per cent and 10.75 per cent, respectively.
