The United Nations Global Compact, in collaboration with Accenture, has released a groundbreaking report highlighting the transformative potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in driving progress towards global sustainability targets. With only 17 percent of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) currently on track, and the 2030 deadline fast approaching, the report—titled "Generative AI for the Global Goals: The Private Sector’s Guide to Accelerating Sustainable Development with Technology"— calls on businesses to embrace AI as a powerful tool for change.

The report emphasises how generative AI can significantly boost operational efficiency, enhance productivity, foster innovation, and streamline sustainability reporting, paving the way for substantial progress on the SDGs. According to the study, 97 percent of business leaders across industries identify generative AI as a key driver of reinvention in the next three to five years.

While acknowledging AI's vast potential, the report also highlights the risks associated with its use. It outlines a comprehensive framework for businesses to adopt generative AI responsibly, prioritising ethical governance, human oversight, and alignment with the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles. The report urges bold, ambitious actions from companies to close the gap between current efforts and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Key Findings:

Operational Efficiency: Generative AI can optimise predictive analytics and maintenance, reducing energy consumption and downtime, critical for businesses managing limited resources to meet sustainability goals.

Sustainable Value Chains: AI can perform lifecycle assessments, identify risks in procurement, and promote sustainable supplier practices. Advanced AI tools track carbon footprints across global supply chains, ensuring high sustainability standards at all levels.

Innovation for Sustainable Solutions: Generative AI accelerates research and development, enabling businesses to create and deploy sustainable solutions quickly. This includes advancements in green finance and sustainable materials.

Communication and Reporting: By automating data collection and reporting, AI simplifies sustainability reporting, ensures regulatory compliance, and raises organisational awareness of sustainability measures.

This report is the latest in the long-standing partnership between the UN Global Compact and Accenture, providing actionable guidance for businesses to use generative AI for sustainable development. It includes case studies, interviews with private-sector leaders, and ready-to-use resources to help companies leverage AI to support both people and the planet.
